Let’s talk about laundry detergent for a minute. There are plenty of toxins in these products, and ever since ditching fake fragrances whenever I wander down those aisles at the stores I get these immediate headaches. Even the baby detergents have toxins in them your baby’s skin shouldn’t be absorbing.
So, how do we lessen the toxin load when doing laundry? Which detergents do we use?
Molly’s Suds Powdered Detergent

You can order this right off of Amazon. I prefer the powder detergent over the liquid as I feel like it got the clothes cleaned better. The powder also seemed to last longer with all the loads of laundry I do in a week. Molly’s Suds founder is a mom and pediatric nurse who lost her daughter. She wanted less toxins for other kids out there.
Branch Basics Concentrate for Detergent
Branch Basics used to be our go to for non toxic cleaning throughout the house for EVERYTHING as they have a concentrate. You divide up this concentrate between the different bottles and add water. So it could be used as an all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, or even laundry detergent. The premium starter kit begins at $75 and the concentrate alone costs $55 for refills. We stopped buying from Branch Basics a few years back to a certain decision they made on canceling one of their influencers. That is our personal choice, but I’m just being honest.
Truly Free Home Detergent
This is what we are currently using and loving for all things cleaning and washing. There is actually scent you can choose for the laundry and it doesn’t give me a headache or cause any breakouts on those who are super sensitive in our home. Some toxic laundry detergents in store give Matthew and Sophia breakouts on their ankles where socks touch and their backs. Truly Free has been great alternative if you miss that clean laundry smell while also being non toxic.
When in store look out for:
If shopping in a store and need to find something while there, look for products that don’t have methylisothiazolinone/ benzisothiazolinone, ethoxylated ingredients (prefix/suffix usually -eth or PPG-/PEG-). Anything that just states FRAGRANCE or PARFUM without disclosing where it comes from, otherwise it’s a chemical shit storm. Also, preservatives like phenoxyethanol and parabens.
Can seem overwhelming, but if you are looking to lessen the toxin load in your home this is one great way to start.
