Post 1: The Weight of the Badge
There’s a quiet heaviness that comes with being a law enforcement spouse, one that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. For nearly 11 years, I’ve carried this invisible weight on my shoulders. It’s the kind of burden that doesn’t show up in pictures or social media posts, but it’s there, in the way I parent alone, sleep alone, and quietly pray through another long shift.
When I married my husband, I knew he had a calling to serve and protect in some capacity. What I didn’t know was how deeply it would impact every part of our lives when he finally completed the process. From night shifts to missed holidays, to always wondering what kind of call he might walk into next, this life stretches you. It teaches you strength. But it also asks more of you than most people ever see.
I remember the first time I really felt the weight of the badge. It wasn’t during an emergency or a big incident. It was an ordinary day. We had two kids at that point. He was working night shift, and I hadn’t heard from him since the night before. I found myself staring at the front door, waiting for the sound of velcro, praying it would come. That’s when it sank in, this wasn’t just his job. It had become our lifestyle.
Add to that the unique fears law enforcement families carry. The safety concerns, the unpredictability, and in our case, the very real moment our home was targeted simply because of the patrol car in our driveway. It changes how you see the world. It changes how you trust it.
God will meet you where you’re at
And yet, God has never failed to meet me in those moments of fear and fatigue.
He gently reminds me:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
—Matthew 11:28
That verse has been on my heart more times than I can count. I cling to it when I’m overwhelmed, when I feel invisible, and when I’m tempted to carry it all alone. Because this weight? It wasn’t meant to be shouldered solo. Not by me. Not by you.
So if you’re a fellow law enforcement spouse, let this post be your reminder:
You are seen.
You are strong.
And you’re allowed to feel the weight, just don’t forget to lay it down at His feet.
We’re in this together.
Welcome to the series.
Journal Prompt:
I think it would be great if throughout this series we really reflected and journaled some thoughts down. Hope you enjoy this series and these prompts!
What’s been weighing you down most lately in this season of law enforcement life? What would it look like to lay that at Jesus’ feet?
